Learn to play the flute
Private lessons

Weekly individual private lessons include sight-reading, technical exercises, scales, and solo repertoire tailored to each student's individual needs.

Beginner

Never picked up the flute before?

It's almost never too early or too late to learn to play the flute! I have taught beginners from age 7 through adult. Lesson time is spent establishing a solid foundation in tone production, posture, breathing, and basic musical skills such as counting and note reading. Solo repertoire and technical exercises will be selected from standard flute pedagogy books such as works by Trevor Wye and Louis Moyse. If the student is also in his/her school's band, I will reserve a few minutes at the end of each lesson to answer any questions about band music. Students will also participate in an annual recital.

Recommended lesson length: 30 minutes weekly.

Intermediate

Been playing for a few years?

Whether you're a young student working your way through the ranks of your school's band program, or an adult amateur looking to continue honing your skills, lessons continue improving technique already established. We will focus on developing good practice habits and self-assessment skills, proper technique and tone development, and musicality through pedagogically-appropriate etudes and solo repertoire. Students  participate in an annual recital, and are encouraged to participate in their school's solo & ensemble festivals, The Chicago Flute Club's competition, and prepare for the ILMEA audition.

Recommended lesson length: 30 or 45 minutes weekly.

Advanced

Ready to take on the world?

Maybe you are a high school student with a high level of commitment, eager to participate in competitions or compete for first chair. Maybe you are thinking of being a music major in college. Maybe being the best high school flutist you can be is your goal before pursuing the career you choose. I can tailor lessons to help you meet your goals, whether it's preparing for college auditions, regional competitions and festivals, or competing for first chair in your band. Students  participate in an annual recital, and are encouraged to participate in their school's solo & ensemble festivals, The Chicago Flute Club's competition, and prepare for the ILMEA audition.

Recommended lesson length: 45-60 minutes weekly depending on the student's goals.
