Reaching musically hungry adults

Music educators spend most of our time focusing on building the skills of children and teens. We prepare them for solo & ensemble festivals, competitions, placement auditions for school ensembles, camps, college auditions, etc.

What happens to your skills after all those school years you spent practicing and performing in school are over? Positions in community bands and orchestras are limited. Professionals take up the spots in regional orchestras and paid "gigs." You're busy with your career and family. Adults are reluctant to take private lessons because they don't want to make a weekly commitment, and without solid goals, lessons can lack direction and purpose.

Many times after meeting new people and making small talk, people tell me "I used to play the flute!" I ask if they still want to play. I get various answers from not having a working flute anymore to not remembering how to read music to those who actively help their own kids practice their band music.

So I was inspired to fill this gap by launching a "Community Flute Circle," a welcoming group for adults of all skill levels who want to play/connect with other flutists who are not professionals. We will meet monthly, and I anticipate the sessions will include some group warmups, some ensemble reading, and some individual attention to players' issues and needs.

I am excited about this since I'm currently working in a full-time job that is not music-related. I miss the connection that classroom teaching gives me to the musically curious, and I enthusiastically await the kickoff of this new project!

We welcome all skill levels. Enrollment is free of charge and no commitment is necessary. Come as often as you like. We meet once a month in Highland Park, IL.

Please fill out this form if you'd like to attend!
